Valle de Losa
Village
Valle de Losa is a municipality of the Las Merindades comarca, in the north of the province of Burgos, made up of 22 minor local entities; its largest settlement, Quincoces de Yuso, holds more than a third of the population. Within its boundaries, in the Sierra Carbonilla, rises the río Jerea, a tributary of the Ebro, and it also encloses a small Biscayan enclave, La Cerca de Villaño. With about 485 inhabitants, the Romanesque hermitage of San Pantaleón de Losa stands on a rocky spur, the Roman villa of Los Casarejos was excavated at San Martín de Losa, and its potatoes are renowned locally.
Hermitage of San Pantaleón de Losa
Monument
It stands on a rocky spur overlooking the whole Losa valley (Burgos) and is considered one of the most original works of Romanesque architecture in Burgos, with some fame for its legendary connection to the Holy Grail. Its doorway shows on one side the celebrated figure of the atlas and on the other a zigzag column, with capitals carved with motifs such as Jonah and the whale or a reptile devouring a fallen man. Consecrated in 1207, it preserved for centuries a relic of the blood of Saint Pantaleon that liquefied on his feast day and drew numerous pilgrims. Its restoration uncovered a necropolis dating from the 13th to the 17th centuries and the remains of an early Christian basilica predating the church. The municipality also holds the Roman villa of Los Casarejos, protected since 1993.
Potato of Losa
Food and drink
The soil and the cool climate of the valley produce a potato of comarca-wide fame, covered by a mark of its own, which has become the main agri-food draw of a municipality of twenty-two entities.
