What to see and do in Berberana

Berberana
Village
Berberana is a municipality of the province of Burgos, in Castile and León, in the Las Merindades comarca and the judicial district of Villarcayo, with 52 inhabitants divided between Berberana itself and the settlement of Valpuesta, whose archive is the source of the cartularies in which the first words written in Castilian Romance are traced. Formerly belonging to the Merindad de Bureba, in 1857 it absorbed the territory of the extinct municipality of Valpuesta. The Palacios family, who emigrated to Venezuela in the 17th century and to whom Simón Bolívar's mother belongs, came from this settlement. In the village stand the 15th-century Sánchez de Velasco tower and the church of San Cornelio y San Cipriano; in 2011 a magnitude 3.4 earthquake was felt there without causing damage.
The cartularies of Valpuesta
Historical milestone
The Valpuesta cartularies are a series of 12th-century documents, copies of earlier texts, some from the 9th century, that record deeds dated between the years 804 and 1200 from the former monastery of Santa María de Valpuesta, in Berberana (Burgos). They are written in a very late Latin that already reveals features of a Hispanic Romance dialect close to Castilian. The preamble to the statute of autonomy of Castile and León cites them, together with the Nodicia de Kesos, as evidence of the earliest traces of Castilian, and in 2010 the Real Academia Española endorsed them as the first documents with words written in Castilian, predating the Glosas Emilianenses, although the latter, unlike the cartularies, already show a Romance grammatical structure.
