The cartularies of Valpuesta Historical milestone · Berberana, Las Merindades, Burgos Image of Berberana, not of the place itself. The Valpuesta cartularies are a series of 12th-century documents, copies of earlier texts, some from the 9th century, that record deeds dated between the years 804 and 1200 from the former monastery of Santa María de Valpuesta, in Berberana (Burgos). They are written in a very late Latin that already reveals features of a Hispanic Romance dialect close to Castilian. The preamble to the statute of autonomy of Castile and León cites them, together with the Nodicia de Kesos, as evidence of the earliest traces of Castilian, and in 2010 the Real Academia Española endorsed them as the first documents with words written in Castilian, predating the Glosas Emilianenses, although the latter, unlike the cartularies, already show a Romance grammatical structure. 804-1200 Photo: Toño Antón (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Berberana
