Presencio
Village
Presencio is a municipality in the province of Burgos, located on the banks of the Cogollos river, 26 kilometres south of the capital, in the former Campo de Muñó of the County of Castile, where it already existed in the 10th century. In the late 14th century it joined the behetrías, towns free from royal abuses in exchange for a protector lord; because of this status no nobleman could settle there, which forced the fortification of the settlement with a wall of which today only an entrance arch remains. In the time of Pope Leo X, the depopulated hamlets of Villacisla and Asturianos were annexed to it, the source of the Romanesque hermitage it preserves today. It has 212 inhabitants, and its Renaissance church of San Andrés, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), holds notable pieces of Burgos silverwork.
