What to see and do in Narros del Castillo

Narros del Castillo
Village
Narros del Castillo is a village in the province of Ávila that the Arabs called Bebán, 'fortified gate', until the Battle of Simancas in the year 939, already in the 10th century; resettled in the 13th century by Navarrese, it was called 'Naharros de Bebán' and from then on belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Ávila. In the 17th century it passed from royal tenure to the Marquis of Mancera and Malpica, a lordship he kept until the 19th century. In the mid-19th century, according to Madoz, it had 40 houses, a square, a school and a town hall that also served as a jail; today it has about 151 inhabitants. Its monumental Mudéjar church, whose first fabric is documented as early as 1250 and which was remodelled between the 16th and 18th centuries, stands where the castle once stood, of which only stretches of mortar wall and river cobbles remain.

The itinerary that threads together the comarca's brick churches stops here before a curved chancel with three tiers of seven doubled blind arches, framed by corner pilasters, and a tower at the west end raised in the sixteenth century.
