Villar de Corneja
Village
Villar de Corneja is a municipality of 31 inhabitants in the valley of the Corneja, province of Ávila, 70 kilometres from the city. Its church of Santa Marina was built in stages: the first, from 1650, left its date on a beam of the Mudéjar artesonado ceiling; the baroque high altar was erected in 1704 by the local artist Manuel González Delgado, with a niche flanked by Solomonic columns, while the side altars were gilded around 1769 and the choir was added in 1713. Near the village, the medieval bridge of La Fonseca, which separates Villar de Corneja and La Horcajada, may have been crossed by Charles V on his way to Yuste in 1556 and by Saint Teresa of Ávila from Becedas; the Cordel de Merinas also passed over it. The old potro de herrar is preserved, restored.
