What to see and do in San Bartolomé de Corneja

San Bartolomé de Corneja
Village
San Bartolomé de Corneja is a town in the comarca of El Barco de Ávila-Piedrahíta, in the province of Ávila, situated in the valley of the río Corneja; its territory reaches barely 7.36 km² and it belongs to the judicial district of Piedrahíta. Its annex is Palacios de Corneja, less than a kilometre away, on the other side of the river. It now has 32 inhabitants, compared with the 75 it had in the mid-19th century.
The church of San Bartolomé Apóstol
Monument
The parish church dedicated to the apostle Bartholomew stands on the right bank of the Corneja, at 999 metres. Madoz described it in the middle of the 19th century alongside a school and sixteen usable houses, in a village of 75 inhabitants.
The Corneja valley
Nature
The Corneja rises beside the Cerro del Santo, at 2,294 metres, and runs forty kilometres through thirteen municipalities to the Tormes, by then on the boundary with Salamanca. Its basin is around 400 square kilometres.
The hamlet of Palacios de Corneja
Curiosity
The district of San Bartolomé de Corneja includes the hamlet of Palacios de Corneja, situated on the opposite bank of the river, so that the municipality, barely 7.36 square kilometres in size, lives split between both sides of the riverbed, less than a kilometre apart between the two settlements. Palacios de Corneja, in the comarca of Barco-Piedrahíta or Valdecorneja, lies on the AV-104 road, which links Piedrahíta, 5 kilometres away, with Santa María del Berrocal, 3 kilometres away. It is practically depopulated, with barely a few dozen residents, although in recent years quite a few new houses have been built and rural tourism also seems to have reached this small settlement.
The sixteen usable houses of 1846
Historical milestone
In 1846 Madoz recorded in San Bartolomé de Corneja a place of sixteen usable houses, a school and a parish church on the right bank of the Corneja, with 75 inhabitants who sowed wheat, rye and barley; today's register stands at around thirty.
The beans of Barco de Ávila
Food and drink
An order of 5 January 1989 gave them the first geographical protection granted in Spain to a pulse. It covers seven varieties: round white, kidney white, long purple, round purple, arrocina, planchada and judión.
