Fray Sebastián de Totanés Curiosity · Totanés, Montes de Toledo, Toledo Image of Totanés, not of the place itself. The Franciscan friar Sebastián Gómez de Herrera, known as Fray Sebastián de Totanés (1688-1748), was born in the Toledo town that gives him his name and took the Franciscan habit at the convent of Fuensalida at the age of seventeen. After studying and teaching Philosophy in Toledo, he left at twenty-six as a missionary for the Philippines, where he arrived in 1717 after a spell teaching in Mexico. There he was minister of the Sampaloc mission and prior of the convent of Manila, where he promoted the Capilla de las Lágrimas, and rose to procurator at the Cortes of Madrid and Rome. In Manila he published in 1745 his Arte y Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala, the first grammar of that language. After twenty-nine years on mission he returned to Spain, where he died at the convent of San Gil in Madrid in 1748. Photo: Rodelar (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Totanés
