What to see and do in Las Herencias

Las Herencias
Village
Las Herencias is a municipality in the comarca of La Jara (Toledo), with 821 inhabitants (INE 2025), which includes the settlements of Las Herencias and El Membrillo; its name comes from the heredades (inherited lands) kept by the farmers of the hamlet of La Peña, abandoned as unhealthy in 1488. The Tagus borders it to the north and west, forming the Azután reservoir, a still stretch of great interest for waterfowl, and its municipal area preserves the Andalusi tower of Ben Cachón and the Arroyo Manzanas site, with an Ibero-Celtic and Roman presence; in 1801 a landslide next to the river uncovered tombs with Arabic inscriptions. After the Reconquest, the area was resettled from the 13th century by Castilians from Talavera.
Tower of Ben Cachón
Monument
The tower of Ben Cachón is an old fortification of Muslim origin located in Las Herencias (Toledo), in an area of small hills known as Los Castillos, next to the River Tajo, which attests to the Muslim occupation of the area before the Castilian resettlement of the 13th century. In 1801 it collapsed into the Tajo, dragging part of the ground of the ravine on which it stood and exposing archaeological remains; later excavations uncovered tombs with Arabic inscriptions. When the river level drops its remains can be seen, although the ground is usually muddy.
Archaeological site of Arroyo Manzanas
Nature
Archaeological site in the municipal district documenting the presence of Ibero-Celtic and Roman populations in the Tagus flood plain.
Reservoir of Azután en Las Herencias
Nature
The Tajo borders the municipality to the north and west, forming the Azután reservoir, a still stretch of great interest for waterfowl. Built in 1969, it has a capacity of 113 cubic hectometres and an area of 1,250 hectares, and supplies a 180 MW hydroelectric power station as well as serving agricultural irrigation in the area. Its waters attract numerous species: as many as 111 different bird species have been recorded, making it a benchmark site for birdwatching enthusiasts.
The estates of La Peña
Historical milestone
The name of the village comes from the estates that the farmers of a hamlet called La Peña kept, abandoned in 1488 as unhealthy. The residents moved to the present site keeping their rights over the lands of origin.
