Retiendas
Village
Retiendas is a municipality of the Serranía de Guadalajara, within the Sierra Norte Natural Park and one of the gateways to the black architecture, crossed by the río Jarama and situated at 898 metres of altitude. Of medieval origin, it became independent from the villa of Tamajón in 1818. Its history is linked to the monastery of Bonaval, founded beside the vega of the Jarama in 1164 by the Cistercian Order and reformed and enlarged in the 17th century; when the monks moved to Toledo, the property passed into private hands and, with the passage of time and erosion, fell into ruin. It now has 52 inhabitants, compared with the 212 it had around 1849.
