Tortuera
Village
Tortuera is a municipality of the comarca of the Señorío de Molina, in the province of Guadalajara, with 157 inhabitants (INE 2025). With a semi-arid climate, with holm oaks, kermes oaks and savin junipers, it belongs to the Ebro basin through the headwaters of the river Piedra. Its surroundings were already settled towards the Late Bronze Age and it preserves remains from the Iron Age, among them the hillfort of Guisema, with a later Roman villa. The village grew up in the 12th century around a Muslim enclave known as 'el Castillo'. It preserves the church of San Pedro Apóstol, with a Latin-cross plan, the palace of the López-Hidalgo de la Vega family, with a battlemented courtyard, and the sanctuary of San Nicolás de Tolentino; its feasts honour the Virgen de los Remedios on 8 September and San Nicolás on the 10th.
