What to see and do in Checa

Checa
Village
Checa is a municipality in the comarca of Señorío de Molina-Alto Tajo, in the province of Guadalajara, set in a valley flanked by the hills of Picorzo and Pedro Maza and by the pine woodland known as the dehesa de La Espineda. Since 1998 it has formed part of the Alto Tajo nature reserve; its humid Mediterranean climate brings very harsh winters, with lows of down to 28 degrees below zero in 1952. Transhumant livestock farming, now in disuse, and cereal and family-garden agriculture have been its traditional livelihood, alongside a timber industry of sawmills and carpentry workshops. In autumn its pine woods yield saffron milk caps and many other varieties of mushroom, eaten grilled with garlic and parsley or stewed with meat, and support a short mycological season.

Food and drink
The pine woods of the sierra give in autumn saffron milk caps and many other varieties of fungi, which are eaten on the griddle with garlic and parsley or stewed with meat. Mushroom gathering sustains a short season that fills the comarca's rural guesthouses.
