Castilnuevo
Village
Castilnuevo is a municipality in the comarca of Señorío de Molina, in the province of Guadalajara, which today has only 8 inhabitants, compared with 111 recorded in the mid-19th century. It forms part of the tourist route of the Camino del Cid. Its castle was built in the early 12th century by the counts of Molina on the banks of the río Gallo, after the reconquest of Molina de Aragón, and once had a barbican that has since disappeared. Two hundred metres from the hamlet stands the church of the Virgen del Valle, built in the mid-12th century to serve the population that grew up around the castle; rectangular in plan with a single nave, a round-arched doorway and a bell-gable, it preserves inside a carved wooden artesonado ceiling added in the 19th century.
