Illana
Village
Illana is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 938 inhabitants, between the Tagus and the sierra de Altomira, in a narrow ravine between high hills. It was the oldest town of the común of Zorita, under the Order of Calatrava, and in 1605 Philip III sold it to the marquis of Almonacid; in the 18th century it passed to Juan de Goyeneche, marquis of Belzunce, under whose lordship Illana saw its greatest growth, with textiles, tanned leather, rope-making and wines famous at Court. Goyeneche had a baroque palace built on the main street, now in ruins, possibly the work of Churriguera. The church of the Asunción has a 16th-century chancel, remade in the 17th, and in its municipal area also stands the castle of Vállaga; the main festival is the Virgen del Socorro, on 8 September.
