Henche
Village
Henche is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 73 inhabitants, whose name comes from a French knight called Dhanche who settled in the village in the 15th century. Known for its wine cellars and gardens of tomatoes, peppers and courgettes, it preserves the Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a medieval bridge, an 18th-century olive-oil mill now abandoned and a Wine Museum opened in 2021 that traces its winemaking history. It celebrates San Bartolomé on 24 August, with a procession and a communal meal in the Parque del Pradillo; the Mayos, on the first weekend of May, when young people used to set up one of the tallest trees in the square; and the Matanza festivities, on the first weekend of December.
