Algarra
Village
Algarra is a municipality in the Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja district, in the province of Cuenca, 98 km from the provincial capital, with barely 25 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with 147 in the mid-19th century. Perched at about 1,289 meters on a hill, it endures a high-mountain climate with abundant snowfall from autumn until well into spring; at the highest point of the hill stand the truncated walls of a castle of probable Muslim origin. Its church of la Asunción, built of masonry with a gabled roof, preserves the wooden roof frame inside and venerates, in a niche in the presbytery, the image of the Virgen de Santerón; during the Spanish Revolution of 1936 it suffered the burning of its objects, jewels and images.
