What to see and do in Alcalá de la Vega

Alcalá de la Vega
Village
Alcalá de la Vega is a municipality in the Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja district, in the province of Cuenca, at 1,200 meters above a vega (fertile plain) that the river Cabriel divides in two and which further downstream is hemmed into a spectacular gorge of meanders. On one of these stand the remains of an Arab fortress, called Al-Qala or Quelasa, identified with the castle of Serreilla and among the oldest in the province; it was taken by Pedro II of Aragón in 1210. In its surroundings there are also Iberian, Roman and Visigothic remains, with tombs from the 4th to the 8th centuries. The municipality preserves the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Remedio, with an octagonal dome, and includes the hamlet of El Cubillo. It has 80 inhabitants.
