What to see and do in Olmedilla de Alarcón

Olmedilla de Alarcón
Village
Olmedilla de Alarcón is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela Conquense, in the province of Cuenca, with 128 inhabitants, situated on the left bank of the Júcar river, near Alarcón, the town on which it historically depended. Its church of San Pedro y San Pablo, completed in 1721, preserves frescoes depicting the Battle of Lepanto and a Romanesque baptismal font, now in the Archaeological Museum of Cuenca, which reuses elements from an earlier building. The hamlet of Gascas, on the banks of the Júcar, was submerged beneath the Alarcón reservoir; its ruins, visible when the water level drops, belong to the territory of Olmedilla, where part of its inhabitants relocated, and since 2010 an annual gathering has been held in their memory. In 1929, a meteorite weighing about forty kilos fell within the municipal territory.
Church of San Pedro y San Pablo de Olmedilla de Alarcón
Monument
A church dating from the early 18th century, with the year 1721 inscribed on the façade as the date the works were completed. It has a single nave, with an ashlar porch and bell-gable. Inside, fresco paintings are preserved depicting an allegory of the Battle of Lepanto and the coat of arms of the Castañeda family in the choir area. The Romanesque-style baptismal font that once belonged to the church is no longer there: it is now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cuenca.
The 1929 meteorite
Curiosity
In 1929, a chondrite meteorite weighing around forty kilos fell in the vicinity of Olmedilla de Alarcón (the Manchuela Conquense, Cuenca), one of the most notable ever recorded in the province.
Gascas, the village under the reservoir
Curiosity
The riverside hamlet of Gascas was submerged when the Alarcón reservoir was built. Since 2010, its former residents have commemorated it on the first Saturday of August in Olmedilla, with a tribute that began with the unveiling of a monolith that same year. The ruins of the village, which belong to the municipal territory of Olmedilla, become visible when the water level of the reservoir drops.
Festivities of San Roque de Olmedilla de Alarcón
Activity
Main festivities in honour of Saint Roch, the leading date on the local festive calendar. They are held in mid-August, between the 13th and the 19th, dedicated to the village's patron saint.
