What to see and do in Cabezarrubias del Puerto

Cabezarrubias del Puerto
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, in the province of Ciudad Real, whose ranges, already cited in the fourteenth century in the Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI as a royal hunting ground, surround the valley of the river Tablillas between the northern Alcudia range and the foothills of Sierra Madrona, crossed by old transhumance drove roads. It preserves remains of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century mine workings of La Petaca and La Jarosa, the station of the narrow-gauge line between Puertollano and Peñarroya and groups of schematic rock art at Las Láminas and the Cueva del Monje; in 1834, having escaped cholera, the inhabitants instituted the festival of San Pantaleón still held today.
Church of San Gabriel Arcángel
Monument
A parish church raised in 1842, coinciding with the town's municipal independence from Puertollano.
Former Station of the Puertollano-Peñarroya Railway
Monument
Building belonging to the railway from Peñarroya to Puertollano and Fuente del Arco, a narrow-gauge mining-industrial line built by the Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya to carry out the ore from its mining operations, which came to exceed 200 kilometres and included an electrified section of about 55. Completed in 1924, it passed into state hands in 1956 and was closed in 1970 for lack of profitability; after closure, some of its stations were demolished and others restored for new uses, as is the case with this one, preserved in the municipality of Cabezarrubias del Puerto.
Rock Paintings of Las Láminas and the Cueva del Monje
Monument
Groups of schematic rock art found at Las Láminas, the Cueva del Monje (Monk's Cave) and the Cueva de la Estación (Station Cave), in the mountains of the municipality. The last of these also preserves traces of a small walled enclosure next to the paintings.
Roman Ford of the Cañada de Puerto Suelta
Monument
Paved ford of Roman origin preserved on the Cañada de Puerto Suelta (a drover's road), at the point where it crosses the río Tablillas, one of the livestock droving routes that cross the municipality of Cabezarrubias del Puerto towards the Valle de Alcudia.
Sierras of Valdoro and del Rey
Nature
Reliefs of the Sierra Norte de Alcudia and the foothills of Sierra Madrona that surround the valley of the River Tablillas, crossed by old transhumance drove roads.
A village in the Libro de la Montería
Curiosity
The Sierra de Cabezas Rubias is already mentioned in the 14th century in the Libro de la Montería (Book of the Hunt) of Alfonso XI, as one of the royal hunting grounds of the Sierra Morena; in fact, this mention is the first documentary evidence of the existence of Cabezarrubias del Puerto as a settlement. The range was known for its abundance of brown bears, whose hunting was the main economic activity around the ermita de San Gabriel (San Gabriel hermitage) during the 16th century.
The 1834 vow to San Pantaleón
Curiosity
During the cholera epidemic of 1834 the villagers commended themselves to San Pantaleón and, having escaped the contagion, instituted the annual festival that is still held today.
Mining heritage of La Petaca and La Jarosa
Curiosity
The municipal district preserves remains of the 19th- and 20th-century mining works (La Petaca, La Jarosa, General-Las Panaderas), with rammed-earth buildings on masonry bases, spoil heaps and washing plants.
Festivities of San Pantaleón de Cabezarrubias del Puerto
Activity
The Fiestas de San Pantaleón, patron saint of Cabezarrubias del Puerto, originated in a vow made by the village in 1834, during a cholera epidemic: the residents promised to hold festivities with bull runs (encierros) and bullfighting events in his honour if the disease stopped. Since then the tradition of the bull runs and popular bull-related festivities has been kept up during the summer patronal festival.
Festival of la Virgen de los Baños
Activity
Celebration shared with neighbouring Fuencaliente in honour of the Virgen de los Baños, in September, held since 1270 according to local legend: a soldier returning from fighting against the Moors found a small image of the Virgin beside a spring and took it with him to Cabezarrubias, but the figure kept disappearing and reappearing at the spring, until a hermitage was built on that very spot, which today is the church of Fuencaliente.
