What to see and do in Granátula de Calatrava

Granátula de Calatrava
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Calatrava, in the province of Ciudad Real, whose very built-up area sits inside a maar and whose district includes the Valdeleón crater, more than two kilometres across, and the Cerro Gordo volcano, turned in 2016 into the first visitable volcano-museum on the Iberian Peninsula. It preserves the site of Oreto y Zuqueca, with a Visigothic necropolis, Islamic baths held to be the oldest dated on the Peninsula and a thirteenth-century Romanesque chapel, the Bronze Age fortified settlement of La Encantada and a first-century Roman bridge; the general Baldomero Espartero was born in the village in 1793.
Archaeological site of Oreto y Zuqueca
Nature
This site, with remains from the Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Arab periods, lies about four kilometres south of Granátula de Calatrava, beside the Jabalón river and around the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Oreto y Zuqueca, from which it takes its name; the complex is dominated by a 13th-century Romanesque hermitage. It includes a Visigothic necropolis and Islamic baths considered the oldest dated ones on the Iberian Peninsula. Its location, beside the river and surrounded by low hills, once made it easier to communicate with the Andalusian region. It can be visited with a guide on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from ten until a quarter to twelve in the morning.
Cerro Gordo volcano
Nature
A volcanic cone with a major axis of one thousand metres and a relative height of ninety metres, concealing in its depths 830 metres of magma, earth and sediment; although it recalls the silhouette of a traditional volcano, with a steep mountain and a crater at the summit, it is in fact a cinder or pyroclastic cone, formed over successive volcanic and hydrovolcanic phases. Turned into a volcano-museum after its opening on 15 April 2016, it is the first volcano on the Iberian Peninsula open to visitors, with educational trails explaining the volcanism of the Campo de Calatrava. It is reached from the road between Almagro and Granátula de Calatrava.
Archaeological site of la Encantada
Nature
The La Encantada site, in the municipality of Granátula de Calatrava (Ciudad Real), is a fortified Bronze Age settlement located atop a hill with wide visual control over the valley and the routes of passage. Although only part of it has been excavated, its urban, funerary and architectural remains are key to understanding the Middle and Full Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula, specifically the variant known as the Manchegan Bronze, within the typology called Facies Castellones, distinct from the Argaric Culture. The groups who lived there kept in contact with people from the eastern Mediterranean, drawn by the metals of the nearby mountain ranges, which makes it possible to regard the site as a centre for the manufacture and distribution of minerals in the southern Meseta.
Valdeleón maar
Nature
An explosion crater more than two kilometres across in the municipal district of Granátula de Calatrava, within the Jabalón valley. The town itself sits inside a maar.
Roman bridge of Baebio Publio Venusto
Monument
The Roman bridge of Baebio Publio Venusto, from the 1st century, crosses the Jabalón river in the municipality of Granátula de Calatrava, near the sanctuary of Oreto y Zuqueca and the ancient Roman city of Oreto. It is partially submerged by the Jabalón reservoir and only visible when the water level drops. As early as the 19th century, Pascual Madoz's dictionary referred to it as "the famous Roman bridge known as that of Bebio".
Palace of los Torrubia
Monument
An 18th-century manor house in Granátula de Calatrava (Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real), protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It is a typical three-storey Manchegan mansion with a columned courtyard, and has attached to it the 15th-century Casa Mudéjar, with which it forms a heritage complex in the centre of the town.
Espartero, son of Granátula
Curiosity
General Baldomero Espartero, regent of Spain, was born in Granátula de Calatrava in 1793. The house where he was born and an equestrian statue keep his memory alive in the town.
