What to see and do in Férez

Férez
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra del Segura, in the province of Albacete, with an old town of Arab street layout where the church of la Asunción stands, of the sixteenth century and with an eighteenth-century organ of notable quality; the southern end of the district is washed by the Cenajo reservoir, whose construction flooded the hamlet of Alcantarilla de Jover. Its festivals of the Virgen del Rosario revolve around the running of the bulls through the cobbled streets, and at Christmas the inhabitants stage a living nativity.
Church of la Asunción de Férez
Monument
A 16th-century church set in the Arab street layout of Férez, which preserves an 18th-century organ of remarkable quality.
Cabeza del Hierro
Nature
A rise south of the town of Férez, in the last foothills of the Sierra del Segura, and one of the municipality's natural viewpoints.
Reservoir of el Cenajo en Férez
Nature
The Embalse del Cenajo, the largest of those formed by the río Segura, bathes with its southern end the municipality of Férez, shared with those of Hellín and Socovos, while the dam itself lies in neighbouring Moratalla. It was built between 1943 and 1952 as part of Francoist hydraulic works policy aimed at curbing the historic floods of the Segura, with a total of 7,700 workers, among them political and common prisoners from the jails of Hellín and Las Minas assigned to the riskiest tasks. To house them, a workers' settlement was built in 1947 with a wash house, chapel, barracks and shops. The construction of the reservoir flooded the only village in Férez, Alcantarilla de Jover, whose population dispersed.
Festivities of la Virgen del Rosario de Férez
Activity
The municipality's patron saint festival, whose most eagerly awaited events are the bull runs and releases through the cobbled streets of the village, accompanied by music, dancing and religious ceremonies.
Living Nativity of Férez
Activity
A Christmas performance in which local people act out the Nativity in corners of the old town, one of the most widely joined events of the year.
The village swallowed by the reservoir
Curiosity
The hamlet of Alcantarilla de Jover, in the municipal district of Férez, was flooded by the building of the Cenajo reservoir, scattering its population.
