What to see and do in Valdeganga

Valdeganga
Village
Valdeganga is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, with 1,970 inhabitants, situated on the right bank of the Júcar, 80 m above the level of its waters, amid traditional orchards and ravines that break up the vineyard plain characteristic of the comarca. In its municipal area, in the place known as El Santo, the ruins of Vallislonga survive, the sixth mansio of the imperial Roman road towards Zaragoza, according to the itinerary of Antoninus; next to them stands the Puente Torres, also of Roman origin. The town centre is presided over by the Neoclassical church of la Purísima Concepción. It lives on cereals, wine, vegetables and irrigated fruit, and a cycle path links it to the provincial capital.
Church of la Purísima Concepción de Valdeganga
Monument
A neoclassical parish church, the principal religious building in the centre of Valdeganga.
Torres Bridge of Valdeganga
Monument
A bridge of unquestionable Roman origin located in the municipality of Valdeganga, linked to the crossing of roads that took place at this stretch of the Júcar valley. It was built next to the ancient settlement of Vallislonga, a Roman city located in the area known as El Santo, within the municipal boundary, which constituted the sixth mansio or station of a Roman imperial road that led to Zaragoza.
Ruins of Vallislonga
Monument
The ruins of Vallislonga are located in the area known as El Santo, within the municipality of Valdeganga. According to the Antonine Itinerary, it was there that the sixth mansio of the Roman imperial road running from the south to Zaragoza stood, at the point where that road met another that ran parallel to the Júcar towards Valencia, Denia and Cullera. Near the ruins a Roman bridge known as Puente Torres is also preserved.
Bank of the Júcar in Valdeganga
Nature
A stretch of the Júcar river on whose right bank Valdeganga sits, about 80 metres above the level of its waters. The course breaks up the plain and gives rise to an area of orchards, ravines and rugged views, in contrast with the grain- and vine-growing plain that surrounds the village. On the irrigated lands near the riverbank cereals, vines, vegetables and fruit trees are grown, making use of the river's water in a region of contrasting landscapes between the plain and the river valley.
Albacete-Valdeganga bike path
Activity
The Albacete-Valdeganga cycle path, also called the Albacete-Ribera del Júcar cycle path, is a 25-kilometre interurban cycling trail linking the provincial capital with Tinajeros, Valdeganga and the bank of the Júcar river, much used by cycle tourists and walkers from the region. It was built between 2002 and 2003 making use of the route of the old road, and was opened on 11 April 2003. It has an asphalt surface, is two-way, has two tunnels and a width of up to five metres along much of its route. In 2015 a cycling and pedestrian footbridge was opened over the A-31 motorway, connecting it with Albacete's urban cycle path.
