What to see and do in Los Llanos de Aridane

Los Llanos de Aridane
Village
The most populous municipality on La Palma, ahead of the island's own capital, with 20,582 inhabitants in 2025. It was established in 1812, and both El Paso (1837) and Tazacorte (1925) later broke away from it.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios
Monument
The main parish church, built by the Castilian conquerors, which preserves the Virgen de los Remedios, a 16th-century Flemish carving and patroness of the municipality, and a Cristo de la Salud made from corn paste by Tarascan indigenous craftsmen from Mexico.
Casa Massieu Van Dalle, en el Llano de Argual
Monument
A 17th-18th-century manor house in the Llano de Argual, the economic cradle of the Aridane valley, with what is described as the finest crenellated portal in the Canary Islands. It now operates as a cultural centre.
Museo Arqueológico Benahoarita
Monument
The main archaeological institution on La Palma, dedicated to documenting Benahoarita culture, the island's pre-Hispanic inhabitants.
Charco Verde
Nature
A volcanic-origin cove with waters of traditional thermal repute, awarded a Blue Flag since 2009.
Los laureles de Indias de la Plaza de España
Curiosity
Eleven specimens of Ficus microcarpa brought from Cuba in the 19th century by returning emigrants, considered the oldest Indian laurels on La Palma.
Monumento Natural del Tubo Volcánico de Todoque
Nature
Also known as the Cueva de Las Palomas, it is a gallery around 3 metres wide and just over 500 metres long, formed by the draining of lava from the San Juan volcano in 1949. It is protected as a Monumento Natural within the Canary Islands Network of Protected Natural Areas for its geological interest and for being home to invertebrate fauna adapted to life in darkness; visiting it requires caving equipment and a specialist guide.
Lo que sepultó el volcán de Tajogaite en Todoque
Historical milestone
Local authorities described Los Llanos de Aridane as the municipality hardest hit by the 2021 eruption. In the settlement of Todoque, the lava flows completely destroyed the church of San Pío X and the health centre, and forced the evacuation of the area's schools, whose pupils were relocated to the town centre.
