What to see and do in Villa de Mazo

Villa de Mazo
Village
A municipality in southeastern La Palma, the third most extensive on the island, considered the craft municipality par excellence thanks to a network of workshops producing openwork embroidery, basketry, ceramics and cigars. It received the title of villa in 1868, confirmed in 1878 by Alfonso XII.
Parque Arqueológico de Belmaco
Historical milestone
A site of Benahoarita rock carvings discovered in 1752 by the governor Domingo Van de Walle, the first find of its kind documented in the Canary Islands. It is today an archaeological park open to visitors.
Iglesia de San Blas
Monument
An early hermitage built around 1495 and raised to a curacy in 1571, dedicated to the municipal patron San Blas de Sebaste.
El Corpus Christi y sus alfombras
Activity
A festival with its first documented procession on 15 May 1605, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional (Festival of National Tourist Interest) in 1985 and recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands. Fifteen neighbourhood groups spend months building arches up to ten metres tall and carpets made of petals, seeds and branches gathered from across the municipality.
Bodega Hoyo de Mazo y la malvasía dulce
Food and drink
The Hoyo de Mazo subzone, within the Denominación de Origen La Palma, is renowned for its sweet malvasía and its red wines, grown on 147 hectares of volcanic soil. The SAT cooperative was founded in 1985, and the winery opened in 1995.
La Escuela Insular de Artesanía
Curiosity
A training centre for traditional crafts — openwork embroidery, basketry, ceramics, woodcarving — through which Villa de Mazo keeps alive its reputation as La Palma's leading craft municipality.
