What to see and do in Breña Baja

Breña Baja
Village
A coastal municipality in eastern La Palma, independent since 1812, which brings together within its small territory four of the island's five terrestrial ecosystems, from coastal cardón scrub to summit pine forest. It is home to the island's main tourist centre, Los Cancajos.
Iglesia de San José
Monument
The old parish church, from 1637, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1996; the current church, from 1973, the work of the architect Miguel Arricivita Calvet, preserves a 16th-century Flemish image of Santa Ana and a silver-gilt monstrance of 17th-century colonial Spanish American silverwork.
Castillo de San Carlos
Historical milestone
A 16th-century coastal defensive fortification built on the site now known as El Fuerte, destroyed by the 1695 flood and later rebuilt.
Salinas de Los Cancajos
Historical milestone
Salt flats laid out in a Greco-Roman style, built in the 18th century, which at their peak produced up to 60 tonnes of salt a year before being abandoned in 1867.
Playa de Los Cancajos
Nature
A black sand beach with volcanic rock formations, the heart of the main tourist development on the island of La Palma.
El primer Día de la Madre de España
Curiosity
On 5 April 1936 Breña Baja became the first Spanish municipality to officially celebrate Mother's Day, on the initiative of the councillor and poet Félix Duarte Pérez, who had brought the tradition over from Cuba. It has been marked ever since on the third Sunday of May.
