Church of Maluenda Monument · Maluenda, Comunidad de Calatayud, Zaragoza The church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora is the Catholic parish church of Maluenda, in the district of the Community of Calatayud (Zaragoza), and it is part of the most notable Mudejar ensembles in the area. It was built between the 13th and 14th centuries, possibly over the remains of an old mosque, and around 1400 it was transformed into a fortified church, with defensive corridors on its upper part built of rammed earth. Its tower preserves two phases: the lower body corresponds to an old Almohad minaret, above which the bell chamber was added in the 16th century. The portal, Gothic in style with a pointed arch, is covered by a large wooden eave that preserved polychromy. The church was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 18 September 2001. Photo: ecelan (talk) (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Maluenda
