What to see and do in Used

Used
Village
Used is a Zaragoza municipality in the Campo de Daroca, close to the Gallocanta lagoon and with 250 inhabitants, situated on the plain of Campo de Bello, at the foot of the sierra de Santa Cruz, in the Iberian System, whose highest point, the Berrocal, reaches 1,433 metres. The village stands at 1,053 metres above sea level and borders to the south on localities of Guadalajara, already in Castilla-La Mancha. Of its 8,513 hectares of municipal land, more than two thirds are under cultivation, devoted mostly to dry-farmed cereals, while the rest is divided between woodland and scrubland of thyme, rosemary, rockrose and broom. It was part of the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca, created in 1248, until its dissolution following the provincial reorganisation of 1833.
Church of Used
Monument
The parish church of San Martín de Tours stands on the Castellar, the highest point of Used, near the Gallocanta lagoon. It is a building of Romanesque origin much altered in the 17th century, with a single rectangular nave covered by a lunette vault reinforced by three transverse arches, two vaulted side chapels and a rectangular apse to the east; the entrance door, with a round arch, opens in the south wall. The tower, at the foot of the temple, has little vertical development and preserves several loopholes and bell openings beneath a roof with a false dome. The interior, formerly decorated with brightly coloured geometric and floral motifs, was destroyed by a fire during the Spanish Civil War, and the temple today stands in a state of general ruin.
Festivities of Used
Activity
The patron saint of Used is San Vicente Mártir, depicted in the niche above the main door of the town hall.
Dissolution of the Community of Villages
Historical milestone
The provincial reorganisation of 1833 left the Comunidad de Aldeas without legal fit, and it was formally dissolved in 1838. The councils of Used and of the remaining hamlets were then integrated into the new municipal and provincial regime.
Artisan goat cheese
Food and drink
In the comarca artisan cheese is made with milk from goat flocks that graze on the cereal plains around the lagoon. It is sold in cured and semi-cured pieces directly at the cheese dairies and at the comarca fairs.
