What to see and do in Cucalón

Cucalón
Village
Cucalón is a small municipality in the province of Teruel, in the Jiloca comarca, with 77 inhabitants and an altitude of 1,034 metres. In 1248, by privilege of James I, it broke away from Daroca and passed to the Sesma de Langa, within the Community of Villages of Daroca, directly dependent on the king, a regime that continued until the death of Ferdinand VII. It preserves a notable religious heritage, with the medieval tower of the church of Santiago and the hermitages of Santa Ana, San Lorenzo and San Bartolomé; that of Santa Ana, a baroque work from the 18th century with a centralised plan and octagonal dome, is related to those of Lagueruela and Loscos. In civil architecture, the town hall's arcade, a group of three dovecotes and the flour mill stand out.
Church of Cucalón
Monument
The parish church of Cucalón, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, dates from the 17th century, but its tower — built in the 15th century in response to the threat of Castilian invasion, over an old refuge-castle reduced to that tower — is one of the finest examples of late medieval fortified churches in the area; known as "La Atalaya", with a truncated pyramidal plan and partially ruined battlements, it is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
