What to see and do in Villel

Villel
Village
Villel is a municipality in the Comunidad de Teruel, on the right bank of the Turia river, at 823 metres above sea level. It preserves a partly ruined castle with its keep, which belonged to the Aben Razin family of Albarracín and was one of the few Muslim strongholds to resist the Christian advance led by El Cid; recaptured by Alfonso II, it passed to the Templars and in the fourteenth century became the head of a commandery of the Order of St John. Two kilometres away stands the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta, in late Gothic style dating from 1561 and the main centre of devotion in the comarca, to which several villages hold a pilgrimage, the most important being that of Villel, on the second Saturday of May. It has 336 inhabitants (INE 2025).
