What to see and do in Libros

Libros
Village
Libros is a municipality in the province of Teruel, in the comarca of Comunidad de Teruel, located on the banks of the Turia River, known at this stretch as the Guadalaviar, at 766 metres in altitude, between the Montes Universales and the Sierra de Javalambre. It has 102 inhabitants. It belonged to the Templar Comanda of Villel, and with the dissolution of the Order of the Temple in 1312 it passed to the Castellanía de Amposta of the Order of the Hospital, as did Castielfabib, in the neighbouring Rincón de Ademuz. The Templars granted it a founding charter in November 1212. In the 19th century, sulphur mining in the La Azufrera quarter, now vanished and located to the southeast of the municipal area, was one of its main industries.
Church of Libros
Monument
The parish church of Libros (Community of Teruel), under the invocation of San Juan Bautista, stands in the village's plaza Mayor, famous for its palaeontological site. It is a rectangular building with three naves, with ordinary masonry walls and a three-slope roof; the central nave has a barrel vault with lunettes and the side naves groin vaults. The bell tower, located at the foot of the building, next to the Gospel side, has five tiers - three square ones in the lower part and two octagonal ones in the upper part - and ends in a spire with an iron weathervane.
Templar settlement charter of Libros
Historical milestone
In November 1212 the Templars granted a charter of settlement to Libros, with agrarian contracts intended to attract settlers to a frontier territory close to the future Rincón de Ademuz. The order thus organised the settlement of the Turia valley.
The sulphur mines of La Azufrera
Historical milestone
The extraction of sulphur was the main industry of the municipality in the nineteenth century and gave rise to a mining quarter of its own, La Azufrera, today disappeared. In 1847 the village had six hundred and thirty inhabitants thanks to that activity.
