What to see and do in Villastar

Villastar
Village
Villastar is a municipality of 566 inhabitants in the Comunidad de Teruel, at 867 metres above sea level in the valley formed by the Guadalaviar river between the Sierra de Peñarredo and the Sierra de Camarena. Nearby is the Celtiberian sanctuary of Peñalba, the Written Mountain, a name given to it by Juan Cabré, a place of pilgrimage whose rock inscriptions may be dedicated to the god Lug, although this is not entirely certain. The mountain suffered heavy plundering: between 1908 and 1909 Cabré himself removed a large part of the inscriptions and sold them, without being their legitimate owner, to the Archaeological Museum of Barcelona, where they are kept today. On the rock, still visible, there are Celtic, paleo-Christian and martial symbols. The village also has a church under the invocation of Santa Engracia.
The Celtiberian sanctuary of Peñalba
Monument
At the site of Peñalba a Celtiberian rock sanctuary is preserved with inscriptions engraved in the rock, possibly dedicated to the divinity Lug. Between 1908 and 1909 Juan Cabré tore out and sold many of them, today dispersed or lost.
