What to see and do in Umbrete

Umbrete
Village
Archbishop Fernando Gutiérrez Tello granted Umbrete its first charter in 1313, with only twelve settlers. The current church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, the work of Diego Antonio Díaz, was built between 1725 and 1733, as was the arch linking it to the archbishop's palace.
Umbrete, del mosto a la aceituna
Village
Municipality of 9,455 inhabitants (2025), 11.9 km², and 123 m altitude, 15 km from Seville. Of Roman origin (the farm villa Umbretum), Alfonso X donated the Muslim settlement of Ombret to the archbishop of Seville in the 13th century, an ecclesiastical jurisdiction that lasted until the 19th-century disentailments. Its residents are also called 'mocholeros/as,' after the legend of a little owl that flew into the parish church one day during mass, and which the faithful, believing it to be the Holy Spirit, chased through the pasture shouting 'Land, Glorious One!'
Palacio Arzobispal de Umbrete
Monument
Summer residence of the archbishops of Seville built in the 17th century, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural and thoroughly restored in 1994; it now houses school facilities and the municipal community center. A 1733 archway, the work of Diego Antonio Díaz, connects it to the neighboring parish church.
Feria del Mosto y la Aceituna
Food and drink
Annual February or March fair devoted to must (grape juice from the September harvest) and to the table olives of the Aljarafe; the 2005 edition drew about 28,000 visitors.
El Arco de Umbrete
Monument
Brick structure built in 1733 by the architect Diego Antonio Díaz, spanning the street with a round arch to connect the Archbishop's Palace with the parish church.
Cruces de término de Umbrete
Monument
Six wayside crosses traditionally mark the old entrances to the village: the Cruz del Pozo Nuevo, the Cruz de la Carrera, the Cruz del Diezmo, the Cruz del Almarchar, the Cruz Quiteria (next to the Hacienda de Lópaz) and a sixth with no documented name, a legacy of a deep-rooted local Christian tradition.
Represión de abril de 1933 en Umbrete

During a day-labourers' protest in April 1933, the Civil Guard killed two residents, Antonio Mateos Hidalgo (19) and Andrés Molano Merino (46), an episode set within the agrarian unrest of the Second Republic.
