What to see and do in Benaocaz

Benaocaz
Village
Benaocaz, in the Sierra de Cádiz, is part of the Route of the Pueblos Blancos and lies in the Sierra del Endrinal, south of the Tavizna river, with its municipal area in the Sierra de Grazalema natural park, at 793 metres above sea level. Founded as a hamlet by the Arabs around the year 715, it remained under Islamic rule until Rodrigo Ponce de León reconquered it in 1485, together with Ubrique, Villaluenga del Rosario, Grazalema and other strongholds known as the 'Siete Villas'; in 1490 the Catholic Monarchs granted it the lordship of those Siete Villas and the marquisate of Zahara. Benaocaz was incorporated into that lordship, and its historic-artistic ensemble, with the best-preserved Nasrid quarter in the district, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) (RI-53-0000327) on 5 February 1985.

Castle of Aznalmara
Monument
The Castle of Aznalmara, or of Tavizna, is a Nasrid fortification of the 13th-14th centuries, built on the top of a hill overlooking the bank of the Tavizna river, at a strategic point on the routes into the Sierra de Cádiz, in the district of Tavizna, within Benaocaz. Now in ruins, it retains the essential elements of medieval military architecture: sturdy stretches of wall and square towers topped with battlements. It was conquered by the Christians in 1410 and again in 1485; its state of conservation is poor, although it retains the grandeur of its original appearance.
