What to see and do in Ubrique

Ubrique
Village
Ubrique is a town of 16,615 inhabitants in the Sierra de Cádiz, near the Roman city of Ocuri, which reached its height in the 2nd century AD. Located at the confluence of the Grazalema and Los Alcornocales natural parks, it is part of the Route of the Pueblos Blancos, and its historic ensemble is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The Ubrique river divides it in two, amid a rocky landscape of olive trees, Spanish firs and cork oaks, between elevations ranging from the 205 metres of the Hurones reservoir to the 1,104 metres of the Sierra de Ubrique. Conquered in 1485 by Rodrigo Ponce de León, it was resettled between 1501 and 1502 by forty Christian families following the expulsion of the Moriscos. It is the cradle of Andalusian leather craftsmanship, and leather remains a fundamental part of its economy.

Castle of Fátima (Ubrique)
Monument
The Castle of Fátima, also known as the Castle of Cardela, is a Muslim fortress of the 12th-13th centuries located on the Sierra de la Silla, above Ubrique (Cádiz). It was a hisn, or frontier stronghold, which came to belong to the Duchy of Arcos; today it is preserved in ruins. It is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the code RI-51-0007641.
Ciudad romana de Ocuri
Monument
A Roman archaeological site located at the Salto de la Mora, one kilometre from the urban centre of Ubrique (Cádiz), whose remains were discovered in 1792 by Juan Vicente Vegazo Montesdeoca. Its stratigraphy spans from the Bronze Age to the Andalusi period. A cyclopean wall, a forum, baths of notable extent, a mausoleum, cisterns of private dwellings and a columbarium with niches beside the main entrance are preserved. Following the excavations by Manuel Cabello Janeiro in the 1970s and by Salvador de Sancha Fernández, the site was incorporated into the Archaeological Route of the Pueblos Blancos, which has equipped it with an interpretation centre and signposted access for visitors.
