Village
Puerto Lumbreras is a municipality in the southwest of the Región de Murcia, on the banks of the rambla Nogalte, in the Alto Guadalentín, bordering Almería, with 18,006 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name refers to the historic water-catchment system beneath the rambla, with a sub-riverbed dam and filtering galleries fitted with lumbreras, vertical access shafts, which led the old Puerto Nogalte to become Puerto Lumbreras; a castle and water wells of Islamic origin are preserved there. Its climate, warm and typical of the south-eastern peninsula, concentrates rainfall in spring and autumn, with summers of marked drought sometimes interrupted by intense rainfall, such as the flood of 19 October 1973, the most severe on record.
Monument
Fortification of Andalusi origin, probably from the 12th century, built on a rise at the southern end of the Sierra de la Torrecilla overlooking the Nogalte rambla; cave houses cut into the rock survive around it.
Monument
The Casa del Cura is a manor house in Puerto Lumbreras with the typical structure of a rural cortijo, made up of a main building, an annexe, a cistern and a plot of more than 7,200 square metres of gardens and vegetable garden. It was built in the 18th century by don Juan Arcas and was linked to farming and livestock work; at the end of the 19th century, its owner Alberto Marzal Arcas was among the estates that administered the waters drawn from the rambla de Nogalte through the Caño and Contracaño filtering-gallery system, for irrigating the campo de Nogalte. The main building, two whitewashed storeys with original cornices and window grilles, has recently been restored, and its conversion into a public and museum space is planned.
Monument
The Casa Museo de las Cofradías is located on Calle Francisco Tirado in Puerto Lumbreras, near the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Opened in 2012 in a building of almost 1,200 square metres, it displays thrones and images from the Holy Week of Puerto Lumbreras, old objects, costumes, banners and the announcement posters of the last twenty years. In the basement is the Cofradía del Cristo de la Fe y María Santísima de la Piedad, and on the first floor the collections of the confraternities of Nuestro Padre Jesús and the Virgen de los Dolores, whose headquarters the building also houses. Its most moving moments are the Silencio procession on Holy Thursday, the Encuentro de Saetas on Good Friday and the one on Easter Sunday, with the images carried by women.
Activity
Main festival of Puerto Lumbreras in honour of its patron saint, with a float parade, craft market, fair and floral offering to the Virgin; 7 October is a local holiday.
Activity
Traditional pilgrimage festival held in the pedanía of El Esparragal, which also takes in the settlement of La Estación, part of the festive calendar of the pedanías of Puerto Lumbreras.
Activity
The patronal festival of the hamlet of Goñar, in the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia), is celebrated on 14 and 15 August in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. On the first weekend of August the image of the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets, stopping at every house, where residents pray or sing the salve depending on whether there is mourning in the household, and make donations to help pay for the festival and the upkeep of the church. One of the most notable events is the football championship, attended by teams from several towns of the comarca of Lorca.
Activity
Puerto Adentro is one of the four diputaciones of the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, in the south-western part of the municipal territory. Its patronal festival is celebrated in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, patroness of the diputación. The main population centre of Puerto Adentro is Góñar, a town whose urban area is split between the municipalities of Puerto Lumbreras and Huércal Overa, the latter already in the province of Almería.
Monument
The Casa de los Duendes, on calle Francisco Tirado on the corner of Doctor Caballero, next to the Casa Museo de las Cofradías, is part of the Conjunto Patrimonial Medina Nogalte, in the historic centre of Puerto Lumbreras. Built in the 19th century, it represents the typical home of a bourgeois family from Puerto Lumbreras and is one of the last surviving examples of that period in the town; it belonged to the family known as the Mayorajos. After being acquired by the Town Council, it was refurbished for public use, as a hall for temporary exhibitions, a space for workshops, screenings and lectures, and the home, among other collections, of the graphology exhibition of Augusto Vels and of the municipal historical archive.
Activity
The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory is located 7 km from Puerto Lumbreras, next to the Youth Hostel, on the summit of the highest hill among those surrounding the hostel, 800 metres above sea level and free of light interference for observing the sky. The building, opened in 2001, has an observation room with a dome and a 12-inch Meade LX 200 reflector telescope, an astronomy classroom with photo and video cameras, and a waiting room with a screen to follow the telescope's image live. Visits are guided by members of the Agrupación Astronómica de la Región de Murcia. Nearby, an ecotourism trail of almost 1,500 metres recreates the solar system to scale, with two sundials and one moondial.
Nature
A fortified Bronze Age settlement from the first half of the second millennium BC, listed as a Catalogued Site of Cultural Interest in 2010. It forms part of a dense network of Argaric villages that occupied Puerto Lumbreras, taking advantage of its strategic position beside the Rambla de Nogalte.
Curiosity
On 19 October 1973 torrential rain of more than 300 mm caused the Rambla de Nogalte to burst its banks with a flow of almost 2,000 m³/s, claiming 84 lives in Puerto Lumbreras. After the disaster the rambla was channelled through the town, which prevented serious damage in an even larger flood in 2012.
Monument
A group of cave dwellings hollowed out of the cerro del Castellar, right in the historic centre of Puerto Lumbreras, inhabited until the last decades of the 20th century and refurbished since 1996 as museums and interpretation centres. Together with the castillo de Nogalte, the Casa de los Duendes, the Casa Museo de las Cofradías and the parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary, they form part of the Medina Nogalte heritage complex, the result of a comprehensive recovery project begun in the 1990s that included the excavation and restoration of the medieval fortress, the development of the hill itself and the improvement of its access routes. Some of the caves dug into the hillside have been given themes to showcase the history and traditions of the municipality.
Nature
A watercourse tributary of the Guadalentín, which is itself a tributary of the Segura, rising in the sierra de las Estancias, in the municipality of Vélez-Rubio (Almería); it soon crosses Puerto Lumbreras and the Lorca hamlet of Campillo, and flows into the sea between Hinójar and La Hoya. Its 139 km² basin and its wide stony bed reflect the major floods it has periodically suffered. In the stretch running parallel to the Sierra de Almenara, as far as the Lorca-Águilas road, agricultural activity has encroached on the channel and erased the direct connection with the Guadalentín, which is only clearly defined again from that point onward. Next to the Cabezo de la Jara, it is listed as a Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (SCI, a European Union environmental protection category).
Monument
The church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the parish church of Puerto Lumbreras, was built in the 18th century, when a new parish was formed by separation from the parish of Saint Patrick in Lorca, and it has undergone various refurbishments throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a temple with a Latin-cross floor plan, built in the old town and dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, patron saint of the municipality, whose feast day is celebrated on 7 October. Inside, notable features include the dome covering the transept, raised around 1820, a 17th-century painting of the Ecce Homo and a 19th-century organ, as well as the penitential chapel, where an old set of Castilian choir stalls stands out.
Historical milestone
Between the 19th century and the Second Republic (1931-1936), Puerto Lumbreras attempted four times to set up its own council, taking advantage of liberal periods, but all the attempts failed and the town continued to depend on the enormous municipal area of Lorca.
Historical milestone
A decree of February 1958 separated from Lorca the entities of Puerto Lumbreras, El Esparragal, Cabezo de la Jara and Puerto Adentro, and in July the first municipal council of its own was constituted, which the town celebrates each year as its independence.
Food and drink
A dish of wheat flour or breadcrumbs worked in the pan and served with pieces from the pig slaughter, tender garlic, sardines or grapes; it is cooked above all on rainy days and at the country gatherings of Puerto Lumbreras.
Food and drink
The local baking preserves the custom of bathing the puff pastries in very hot sugar so that they keep without refrigeration, a technique that accompanies the Easter cakes, the orange cakes, the marzipans and the Christmas cordiales.
