Cave of el Pindal Nature · Ribadedeva, Oriente, Asturias The Pindal cave opens near Pimiango, in the municipality of Ribadedeva, at the eastern edge of Asturias, with a linear layout divided into an eastern sector, open to the public, and a western one with restricted access. Its cave paintings, known since 1908, form a cavity about three hundred metres long with twenty-nine animal figures painted and engraved thousands of years ago: thirteen bison, eight horses, a hind, a stag, a fish and a mammoth -extremely rare motifs on the Cantabrian coast- along with abundant red signs such as dots, strokes and claviform figures. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1924, it has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since July 2008, within the group Cave of Altamira and Palaeolithic cave art of the Cantabrian coast.
