What to see and do in Bóveda

Bóveda
Village
Bóveda is a municipality in Lugo province with about 1,400 inhabitants, in the comarca of Tierra de Lemos, in a transitional area between the Val de Lemos and the mountains, with Mount Couso as its highest point, at 689 meters, at its western end; the rest of the municipality averages around 450 meters in altitude. Its river network belongs to the Miño-Sil basin, with the Mao river, a tributary of the Cabe, as its main collector after crossing the Vilasouto reservoir. The population, scattered across 14 rural parishes and 86 settlements, is concentrated mainly in the town of Bóveda and in Rubián. The municipality lives off dairy farming and preserves the pazo of the marquises of Bóveda, an 18th-century manor house with an Italian air; its main festivals are the Ecce Homo of Rubián and the San Xil of Bóveda, both in September.
Palace of os Marqueses de Bóveda
Monument
A manorial residence in the parish of San Martiño raised in 1769 with an Italianate air on an earlier 16th-century fabric, surrounded by gardens and holding a collection of works of art inside.
Church of San Fiz de Rubián
Monument
The parish of San Fiz de Rubián has been linked to the monastery of Samos since a 1175 bull of Pope Alexander III, by which the monks continued to enjoy their jurisdictional rights over the place. Its parish church, originally built in the 16th century and much altered since, has a rectangular plan, with the chancel separated from the nave by a round arch and the sacristy attached to its north side; the same parish also preserves the chapel of the Ecce Homo, next to which traces of ancient graves can still be made out. At the place of Eimer also stands the Casa Torre de Eimer, with its own chapel and a marble coat of arms on its east façade, and at O Gruñedo, the Casa Torre of the same name.
Mount Couso
Nature
At 689 metres it is the highest point in the municipality and commands its western half; from its slopes opens the step that separates the Val de Lemos from the uplands rising towards the Serra de Fornelas.
Penacova
Curiosity
Penacova is a small rural settlement in the parish of Remesar, in the Lugo municipality of Bóveda, in the comarca of Terra de Lemos, close to the boundary with Paradela. It lies at 460 metres above sea level, at the foot of Mount Remesar and beside the riego da Ribeira, and in 2022 had only 5 inhabitants. It preserves, clustered together, an old forge, a mill and a fountain of iron-rich water, a small catalogue of the popular architecture of inland Lugo gathered within a few hundred metres. The forge has documentary references dating back to 1780 and is well preserved, with the forge itself, the trip hammer, the bellows and the hydraulic machinery working thanks to its restoration; beside it, on the same site, stands the Penacova mill, also well preserved.
Palace of Guntín
Monument
An eighteenth-century seigneurial house of the parish of Guntín, one of the two pazos of the concello of Bóveda together with that of the marquises of Villaverde de Limia, in the municipal capital; both belonged to the lordship of the count of Lemos.
Chapel of o Ecce Homo de Rubián
Monument
An eighteenth-century hermitage in the parish of Rubián, raised beside the church of San Fiz, of the sixteenth century; both churches form the oldest religious ensemble of the concello of Bóveda.
Banks of the Cabe at Bóveda
Nature
A stretch of the río Cabe as it passes through the concello of Bóveda, twelve kilometres upstream of Monforte; its banks are declared a special conservation area for the quality of their alder groves.
