What to see and do in Montánchez

Montánchez
Village
Villa located at 705 m altitude, crowned by the Sierra de Montánchez (whose highest point, Monte Viejo, reaches 998 m). Documented in 1095 as a Muslim fortress of the Aftasid kingdom of Badajoz. It had 1,597 inhabitants in 2025. The comarca is famous for raising acorn-fed Iberian pigs and curing hams, thanks to the sierra's microclimate.
Castillo de Montánchez
Monument
Fortress of Roman origin in its main body, reinforced by the Almohads in the 12th century, from whom three cisterns survive. The wall, the keep, wine cellars, another cistern, and a 17th-century chapel were added later.
Jamón de Montánchez
Food and drink
Curing Iberian ham is one of the most notable traditional activities of Montánchez and its sierra, favored by a microclimate suited to natural drying and by the raising of acorn-fed Iberian pigs in the surrounding dehesas.
