What to see and do in Arroyomolinos

Sorpresa de Arroyomolinos (28 de octubre de 1811)
Historical milestone
On 28 October 1811, during the Peninsular War, an allied Anglo-Spanish-Portuguese army under the British general Rowland Hill surprised and defeated French troops under General Jean-Baptiste Girard in the village itself. The episode is known as the Battle of Arroyo dos Molinos or 'Sorpresa de Arroyomolinos' (Surprise of Arroyomolinos) and is commemorated every year with a historical re-enactment on the same date.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación
Monument
Parish church whose first foundations date back to the 16th century, though it was not completed until the 17th. It has a single nave with four bays and barrel vaults and a polygonal apse, and a doorway blending Gothic and Renaissance elements. Inside it preserves a 15th-century plateresque tomb, with a crucifix and angels carved in stone, and a panel of the Virgen de la Leche.
Ermita de San Sebastián
Monument
Hermitage of the village's former outlying quarter, with a single nave with three sections, a camarín and a sacristy. It is considered a small Renaissance jewel for its titular image of Saint Sebastian, a documented work by the Flemish sculptor settled in Seville Roque Balduque (active until his death in 1561).
Fiestas de Arroyomolinos
Activity
The local festive calendar includes San Sebastián (20 January), Jueves de Comadres and carnival, the La Jira pilgrimage on Easter Sunday, the Virgen de la Consolación (15 August), the Chaquetía (1 November), and the commemorative re-enactment of the Sorpresa de Arroyomolinos (28 October).
