What to see and do in Garrovillas de Alconétar

Garrovillas de Alconétar
Village
Medieval villa located along the old Roman Vía de la Plata, between Emerita Augusta (Mérida) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga). The place name Alconétar comes from the Arabic al-qantara ("the bridge"), referring to the nearby Roman bridge of the same name. Repopulated after the Reconquest by the Order of Alcántara, it experienced its greatest splendor between the 15th and 16th centuries under the lordship of the Counts of Alba de Liste.
Plaza Mayor de Garrovillas de Alconétar
Monument
Arcaded square of about 4,000 m² built between the 15th and 16th centuries, with two-story houses over arcades of granite arches and upper galleries of round-arched windows on slender columns; there are 65 arches and 103 windows in total. Some columns lean slightly, attributed to the effects of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Puente romano de Alconétar
Monument
Old Roman bridge over the Tajo river that gave the town its name (from al-qantara, "the bridge"), today submerged beneath the waters of the Alcántara reservoir. One of its arches was moved about 6 km from its original site after the reservoir was built in 1969, for its preservation.
