On 28 October 1811, during the Peninsular War, an allied Anglo-Spanish-Portuguese army under the British general Rowland Hill surprised and defeated French troops under General Jean-Baptiste Girard in the village itself. The episode is known as the Battle of Arroyo dos Molinos or 'Sorpresa de Arroyomolinos' (Surprise of Arroyomolinos) and is commemorated every year with a historical re-enactment on the same date.
