What to see and do in Mata de Alcántara

Mata de Alcántara
Village
Municipality whose origin is linked to the Reconquest and to the Military Order of Alcántara, after the conquest of these territories by Alfonso IX of León, who took Alcántara in 1213 and handed it to the order for its defense and organization.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia
Monument
Unfinished 16th-century work by architect Pedro de Ibarra, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. It preserves the main altarpiece and remains of mural painting by Juan de Ribera; the works at El Escorial left the church without stonemasons, and it was not definitively completed until 1986, on the initiative of the parish priest Remigio García.
Ermita de San Lorenzo
Monument
Hermitage surrounded by anthropomorphic tombs and granite outcrops ("bujíos") of medieval date, which give the site a distinctive appearance.
La Pela del Potro
Activity
Livestock tradition in which riders round up the horses and colts from the countryside to shear their manes and tails before summer; it used to be a task done individually by herders until the equestrian association La Montosa turned it into a public festival about fifteen years ago. The day begins with Extremaduran migas by the fire and ends with a popular tasting of cocido stew after the animals are released.
