What to see and do in Villa del Rey

Villa del Rey
Village
Small municipality of the Tajo-Salor comarca, with flat terrain and gentle slopes, neighboring Piedras Albas, Alcántara and Brozas.
Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor
Monument
16th-century Renaissance building, the town's main monument, with a partially preserved mural painting of Santiago Matamoros attributed to the painter Juan de Ribera (active in 1585 in nearby Mata de Alcántara) and a small Rococo altarpiece from around 1760 bearing the coat of arms of the Order of Alcántara.
Torre de Belvis
Historical milestone
Villa del Rey may have arisen linked to the encomienda of Belvis y Navarra of the Order of Alcántara, of which only the name, the pasture land, and scant remains of its fortified house, the Torre de Belvis, survive, apparently destroyed by the infante Pedro de Aragón around 1431 during his revolts against his cousin Juan II of Castile.
Las ermitas desaparecidas de Villa del Rey
Historical milestone
According to the 1791 Interrogatorios of the Real Audiencia de Extremadura, Villa del Rey had four religious buildings; of the three hermitages (San Blas, San Bartolomé and Santos Mártires), only sorry remains of the first two survive.
