What to see and do in Guareña

Guareña
Village
Municipality of 6,665 inhabitants (2025), including the settlement of Torrefresneda, at 285 m altitude (with the municipal territory ranging between the 500 m of the southern dehesas and the 220 m of the Guadiana riverbank). Its name is not documented until the 13th century, in a charter of Alfonso X; the Catholic Monarchs granted it the title of 'Leal' (Loyal). It reached a peak of 10,323 inhabitants in 1962, after which it suffered heavy emigration.
Yacimiento tartésico de Casas del Turuñuelo
Monument
5th-century BC Tartessian site excavated since 2015 by a team from the CSIC and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. It is the best-preserved protohistoric building in the western Mediterranean, with its two floors still standing up to 6 m high. In its main courtyard the ritual sacrifice of 52 animals (41 of them horses) was documented, the first manifestation of this kind of rite found anywhere in the Mediterranean; later excavations also uncovered the earliest known human representations of Tartessian culture. It is considered one of the greatest Spanish archaeological finds of the last decade.
Capilla de San Gregorio
Monument
A Baroque chapel in Guareña with a triple-arched portico resting on granite columns, one of the municipality's minor religious buildings alongside the parish church of Santa María.
El título de 'Leal' y la batalla del Salado en el escudo de Guareña
Historical milestone
Guareña's coat of arms recalls the participation of its townspeople in the Battle of Río Salado against Muslim troops, with a flowered cross flanked by two crescent moons. The Catholic Monarchs granted the town the title of 'Leal' ('Loyal').
Meteorito de Guareña
Curiosity
A chondritic meteorite (classified as an H6 chondrite) that fell on the municipal term of Guareña, preceded by a loud noise and three detonations. Two fragments were recovered, of 32 and 7 kg, about 8 kilometers apart, totaling 39 kg. It is kept at the National Museum of Natural Sciences.
