Yacimiento tartésico de Casas del Turuñuelo Monument · Guareña, Vegas Altas, Badajoz Image of Guareña, not of the place itself. 5th-century BC Tartessian site excavated since 2015 by a team from the CSIC and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. It is the best-preserved protohistoric building in the western Mediterranean, with its two floors still standing up to 6 m high. In its main courtyard the ritual sacrifice of 52 animals (41 of them horses) was documented, the first manifestation of this kind of rite found anywhere in the Mediterranean; later excavations also uncovered the earliest known human representations of Tartessian culture. It is considered one of the greatest Spanish archaeological finds of the last decade. siglo V a. C.
