What to see and do in Obanos

Obanos
Village
A town of the Valdizarbe documented since 978, when King Sancho Garcés II donated the salt tithes of Obanos to an Aragonese monastery. In the 13th century it hosted the Juntas de Infanzones de Obanos (Assemblies of the Untitled Nobility of Obanos), a broad brotherhood of the social forces of the kingdom of Navarre, and it attained the title of town in 1665. It has about 920 inhabitants spread across four neighborhoods: San Juan, San Lorenzo, San Martín, and San Salvador.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Obanos
Monument
The deterioration of the old Gothic church of Obanos led to it being torn down and the current neo-Gothic church built in 1912, reusing the medieval doorway and tower. It was restored in 2007.
El Misterio de Obanos
Curiosity
The town preserves the medieval legend of Guillén, prince of Aquitaine, who, after making a pilgrimage to Santiago, killed his sister Felicia and retired as a hermit to the chapel of Arnotegui. In even-numbered years, the residents of Obanos perform this story in the "Misterio de Obanos," a theatrical mystery play of great popular tradition.
Donde confluyen los caminos de Roncesvalles y Somport
Curiosity
A sculpture titled "Un Camino" ("A Way") marks in Obanos the point —also claimed by neighboring Puente la Reina— where the Camino de Santiago coming from Roncesvalles converges with the one arriving from Somport through the Aragonese Pyrenees.
