What to see and do in Adiós

Adiós
Village
A small municipality of the Valdizarbe, on the southern slope of the Sierra del Perdón, documented since 1256. Its area comprises the village and the depopulated site of Larráin. The origin of the place-name, which coincides with the Spanish word for "goodbye," gave rise to a popular legend about the War of the Navarrería (1276); specialists actually derive it from the Navarrese place-name suffix "-oz" attached to a personal name now lost.
Iglesia de San Andrés de Adiós
Monument
A 16th-century parish church, expanded in the Baroque period, dedicated to the village's patron saint. It preserves two 1632 altarpieces by Martín de Echeverría, with scenes from the Passion of Christ and the life of San Andrés. Between the church and the village stands a stone cross from 1897.
La leyenda del nombre de Adiós
Curiosity
Oral tradition holds that the village's name arose from the withdrawal of Castilian troops during the War of the Navarrería in 1276, who are said to have bid farewell saying "a Dios, a Dios" ("goodbye, goodbye"). The documentary record disproves the anecdote, since the place-name already appears recorded in 1256, twenty years before the episode supposedly giving rise to it.
