Altsasu/Alsasua
Village
Documented since the 12th century as part of the Burunda valley, from which it separated as its own municipality in 1846. King Alfonso XIII granted it the title of "Muy Ilustre Villa" ("Most Illustrious Town") on 27 March 1907. The head town of the Sakana region, it has 7,717 inhabitants (2025).
El nudo ferroviario de Alsasua
Historical milestone
The station, opened in 1864 when it connected the Madrid-Hendaya and Castejón-Alsasua lines, turned the town from an agricultural into an industrial one. The Sunsundegui bodywork factory, linked to that development, came to employ around 300 people before its closure in 2025.
Iglesia de la Asunción y dólmenes de Alsasua
Monument
The 16th-century parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción presides over the town center. Several megalithic dolmens are also preserved in the municipal area, including those of Balankaleku and Munaan I and II.
Fiestas de Santa Cruz y el San Silvestre de Alsasua
Activity
The patron saint festival of Santa Cruz is celebrated from 13 to 17 September, in addition to the fiestas of San Pedro on 29 June. Alsasua's year-end San Silvestre race is, according to its own town council, the oldest of those held in Navarre.
