What to see and do in Arguedas

Arguedas
Village
A town conquered from the Muslims in 1084 by Sancho Ramírez. Its population fluctuated dramatically in the Middle Ages — from 191 households in 1353 to only 30 in 1379 — and in 1512, after the annexation to Castile, its strategic castle was demolished.
Las cuevas de Arguedas
Monument
Dwellings excavated into the rock that emerged in the late 19th century as shelter for families with scarce resources, at a time when precarious farm work and the price of houses left many townspeople without a housing alternative. In 1940 there were 52 inhabited caves; they were gradually abandoned in the 1960s as the Patronato's social housing was built. Seven of them, restored, today make up the Espacio Cultural de las Cuevas, with five faithfully reconstructed with period furnishings.
El Cabezo de Castildetierra y las Bardenas Reales
Nature
The Bardenas Reales are a semi-desert area of 41,845 hectares of clay, gypsum and sandstone eroded by water and wind, managed since 1705 by a community of 22 co-owning entities (19 municipalities, 2 valleys and a monastery) with historic grazing rights. On 6 April 1999 they were declared a nature reserve, and on 7 November 2000 UNESCO recognized them as a Biosphere Reserve, the first in Navarre. Its most photographed icon, the Cabezo de Castildetierra, is a 'fairy chimney' formation — a layer of more resistant rock over soft material — located within the boundaries of Arguedas, next to the park's visitor center at the Finca de los Aguilares.
Basílica de la Virgen del Yugo
Monument
A sanctuary of Arguedas's patron saint, the Virgen del Yugo, canonically crowned in 2010.
Iglesia de San Esteban de Arguedas
Monument
A Gothic-Renaissance parish church from the 16th-17th centuries.
Ermita de San Miguel de Arguedas
Monument
A 16th-century ermita now converted into a cultural center.
Palacio de los Bobadilla de Arguedas
Monument
An 18th-century civil palace in the municipality of Arguedas.
