Las cuevas de Arguedas Monument · Arguedas, Ribera, Navarra Dwellings excavated into the rock that emerged in the late 19th century as shelter for families with scarce resources, at a time when precarious farm work and the price of houses left many townspeople without a housing alternative. In 1940 there were 52 inhabited caves; they were gradually abandoned in the 1960s as the Patronato's social housing was built. Seven of them, restored, today make up the Espacio Cultural de las Cuevas, with five faithfully reconstructed with period furnishings. 1940 Photo: Araceli Merino (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Arguedas
